trick the youg-uns! oh deer (12 deers of Christmas)

yesterday was my first official full day of vacation. it kinda' started before that, as i got cards in the mail and a goodie packaged from the team at the home office in dallas. YUMMERS! fun tradition. i explained to suzanne that while it did not arrive in the prettiest of fashion (i think the only intact piece was the lemon bar), it made me feel like i had more...by the piece-count...and it really didn't matter, as the taste was not hampered! also packed in there was a sampling of chex-type-mix-ish, and a home-crocheted (that is not crotch-eted, it's crochet-ed...) dish scrubber from one of my colleagues-so thoughtful! let's just say it was a great effort to make holiday cleanup more festive! trick the young-uns, that's what i always say! (disclaimer: never said that before in my life, but i kinda' like it and you should expect to hear me saying it more often...if i can work it into a professional development, it's on! challenge accepted...surely there's a powerpoint slide for that...no? hold my rootbeer).

oh what fun it is to scrub!

yes, so that was the beginnings of fun, then after shea's atlanta/memphis fiasco flight, we went for one last beach hurrah, and seafood at the ole salty dog! good times!

then it was home to finish packing. it had to be an early night because traveling mornings start early: 5:30 alarm!

the original plan was to stop in chatanooga and stay at a hotel, using points from southwest. well, their i-hotel voucher system is not top-notch in my book. i had a devil-of-a-time trying to get it booked, but i did find a baymont inn and suites that looked nice, pet-friendly, near the hwy, at the base of lookout mountain...sweet! i didn't have the actual voucher printed out, but i had the confirmation number and screen shots of the reservation, place, address, etc. put the address in my google maps and we were off!

i'd packed the car mostly the night before, so i put the boys' harnesses on, and of course they were thinking long walk, so i took them on a faux-sunrise walk...halfway down the block and turned around to take them back and get them in the car...trick the young-uns, that's what i always say! anyhoo, it worked. fueled up, and off to the races by 7. unfortunately not early enough to avoid the traffic melt-down in tampa near i-4...hot mess. of course it didn't help that it was a foggy morning- patchy, but heavy in areas.

once we started getting close to chattanooga (around 6:30-ish), i began looking forward to chilling out with the boys and enjoying some quality hotel time. (is that even a thing?) it was dark, the fog continued up through georgia and into tennessee, and it was misting almost the entire trip- in spurts.
it was just kinda' meh all day.
this wouldn't bother so much, but any time i stopped for a bathroom break, i figured i should let the boys out to stretch as well- it was wet everywhere, so their little paws got wet, and since their bellies are so close to the ground, they were in need of drying off after every outing. eesh. and chaco hadn't drank all day-he doesn't when we travel, so i figured they were ready. upon nearly arriving, there was a huge traffic back-up, so google took us in a round-about way to the address she was given. when we arrived, there was no baymont inn. i was slightly mystified...so i pulled into an auto-store parking lot and began looking; this is what i found:
HMM... permanently closed caught my eye...
at that point, i wasn't sure exactly what the plan was to be, so i got on the i-hotels website, where i'd booked the reservation, and sent them a message-letting them know that the baymont inn i'd booked at was closed. there was a number to call, but it is in the UK, and has different time, etc...so message was the option. at that point, i just asked them if they could reissue another voucher. and, being short on patience and thrifty, i had zero desire to find another place to stay that was pet friendly, and have to shell out a bunch of money, when i was expecting to not have that expense.

so i took the boys to wendys, peed, got a baconator jr. meal and a frosty (because how can you not)...then took the boys under the awning of the ace hardware store next door to 'walk'...finally bruno relieved himself near a bale of hay, and chaco then decided it was ok as well (number 1, if we're all on the same page as far as potty-ratings go, no pick-up necessary). then we went back to the car, i dried them off and sat them in the trunk, while i rearranged their travel space. if we were going to shoot for the moon and keep going, i was not going to make them stay in their kennels. so i removed to door from the bigger kennel and faced it to the middle, collapsed chaco's kennel and folded it up, pulled out the dog blankets and dog bed, and they had a little doggie motel in the back seat. i plugged in mom and dad's address and we were on the road again!

i'd been listening to true crime podcasts most of the way, and continued for a couple more hours before switching to music. eta: 3:30 my time. uf. i called mom to let her know about the change in plans, and told her i wasn't sure exactly when i'd arrive, because if i got tired, i planned to stop at a rest area to take a nap, so if they could leave the door unlocked and i'd just let myself in. it really was a good plan, and as i drove, i kept wondering when i was going to start getting tired...as you recall, i'd been up since 5:30, and if you know me, i'm not a late-night girl...that said, midnight rolled around, and i was still doing alright. got out of tennessee, making our way through kentucky, and i don't think i saw a single rest-stop after about 80 miles from chattanooga...then we hit illinois-which threw me for a loop, my geography hadn't prepared me. but it was only for literally 2 minutes, so we must have hit the southernmost tip of IL, and if i'd blinked, i would have missed the three signs saying leaving kentucky welcome to illinois welcome to missouri!  (6 states today, ya'all! and not the tiny delawares and new hampshires...) it was that quick and a couple of bridges! from there it was mostly back road.

google was taking us by way if poplar bluff, through "be-sure-to-get-gas-before-entering" land...because once you hit those back country roads, you may or may not see a gas station, and at 1-2 am, the likelihood of it being open is slim! as i drove through poplar bluff, i reminisced of the time trish and i drove there from k-2 for a dear friend, julia's wedding! good times! i thought about julia, as we've since lost touch-she was a great letter writer, and always included quotes. i started thinking about how to get a letter to her to see how she's doing...offer some encouragement... i realize that's so random, but so were my thoughts last night!  as i was speedster-ing junction tt, h and o, i was hyper aware, trying to be preemptive should a drunk teen or college student  be traversing these backroads; should the need arise, where would the least damage occur if i were to swerve off to avoid oncoming traffic? ...all too aware of the many losses. (sad-face-emoji)...and there to slow me down were deer. the first buck was stepping delicately onto the pavement on the other side and stepped back (it didn't help that there was still a bit of fog). all told, i would come across 12 deer. (like the 12 deer of Christmas, my true love gave to me...minus true love-and that there just made me think of the princess bride...this is getting out of control as deer in MO have nothing-nada to do with one of the greatest movies!) there were 2 singles, i'd love to have been able to hook them up, play cupid.. but one was in kentucky, the other in missouri...so distance would be a thing, and as they have hooves, communication via usps would not be an option, so i scrapped that idea...then there were about 3 couples...late night rendezvous, and the best was the group of deer (4 doesn't make a herd in my book, so i'm sticking with the lame choice: group); there were 4 of them, probably a party or a game of jenga...or perhaps planning on how to takeover the world (i'm sure gary larson, the far side comic genius would've known, but i'm not well-versed in deer behavioral analysis).

travelling for Christmas and Thanksgiving always brings back memories of being in the backseat sleeping and waking in the dark little towns with their decorations glowing in the night, sometimes the magical flurries were floating...good memories!
only instead of snow, fog

it was a pretty awesome manger up on the hill
i still got it! (if 'it' is the stupidity that makes you go longer than you should, i don't really think that's anything to brag about, and in all fairness, i don't really want 'it')

anyhoo, i wasn't sure which side of town i'd be arriving on, but it was just in time, as the gas light came on...i should have enough fuel to last me the next few days, traipsin' about town.

today, i'm beat. my body will probably catch up by the time we leave. and i got an email message from the UK ihotel people saying: yes, we have your confirmation for comfort inn and suites, you should be set for the 19th. (it's the 20th dude. and i reserved a room at the baymont inn-ya' should've let me know that it had changed ownership since whenever you first started doing this hotel voucher business. keep up... and whatever you're smoking, just...stop).

hope everyone is having safe travels (even if it's just traveling from one room to the next)!

the pre-cursor...travel, hotel check-in and psycho (but not in my hotel room)

monday morning i had some last minute things i needed to do before going to the airport. i'd forgotten to make a reservation at the parking spot, so i ended up going with: PARK-N-FLY...not sure what to expect. i also knew that before the flight, i had to stop at the store for more chaco-food and drop it off at joanne's. i really should have set up the new printer the night before...so here i was last minute trying to get the printer all set up, somehow (i don't even know) i was able to set it up through the router and manage it all and it actually worked the first second third time! i may or may not have accidentally turned it off a couple of times and blah blah blah...what you need to know is that i was able to get my parking receipt printed!

so park-n-fly...i reserved a spot, and when i arrived to the spot my google maps indicated, i didn't see it, so i had to do a stealthy turn-around in a private parking spot, and on the second pass, i found it...only it looked incredibly full. there was only one slot left-and i snagged it, then made my way to the shuttle.

i was thrilled when i got to the terminal and brian informed me that due to the nature of our tickets, i was able to go through the tsa prepass! woot!! so i LOVED it...i may be investing in the tsa prepass and going to the bldg to get approved. totally worth it. i mean, who doesn't want to feel like a super-rock-star?!

brian was on top of it: he was our go-to-guy...our contact man...our 'handler'(just finished a great fbi/spy series on netflix)... he booked our flights, kept us in the loop, checked us in, booked the rental...we were certainly spoiled this time! #nevertakeitforgranted

randi met up with us at love field, coming in from new orleans. and then we met janet at the gate. we had fabulous seats (always a plus in my book), plenty of time to write a great letter to one of my former kampers, whom i've not written to in ages. we got to denver a little delayed due to storms in the area-we were in a holding pattern for a bit before the let us land, so we met up with angelica when we landed, and took off for our luggage and rental car. on the ride to the hotel, randi provided her own version of navigational play-by-play...glad he was driving, not me.
in the airport upon arrival
upon trying to check in to the inn, there may have been a couple of glitches. it was almost like mary and joseph when the keeper said:NO ROOM IN THE INN, and there was no stable or anything like that, because all was booked in town for special conventions or something...but basically we KNEW that we had bookings, but the nice, young man at the counter couldn't find us. apparently when the reservation names were changed to reflect the correct inhabitants, the random on the other end of the line may have either had too much 'legal cannabis' in their system, or been of thick, heavy accented persuasion, not inputting names correctly. either way, we had to call in the heavy hitters..julie k and sabrina were there in a minute and it was as if they were all playing with one of those three part kid books, with the mix & match pages where kids create alien-looking-animals, only with names...so we made it work, as the place was completely booked...we may have inadvertently snatched someone else's rooms, but the fact is, we booked it, we weren't leaving the counter without our rooms! #notfeelingguilty.

after settling into our rooms, a group of us set off in search of food. parking was the biggest issue, so finally when push comes to shove, one must valet the mom-mobile. and due to the excessive wait-time at the restaurant LINGER (irony)...we backtracked to vita...apparently a fancy wine boutique/restaurant. the hostess was by no means "the mostest." well, perhaps she is the mostest rude...snide...there were six of us and it was slow, not busy, yet under her breath she mumbled something about a reservation and how we should have one. i was about to giver her the stink-eye, but i'm pretty sure alicia got to it first, so i got to be nice. dinner was lovely, but we were all exhausted, so we finished, and made it a short night.
great area-restoration and lots of historical buildings
the following morning, we were going to be off to our first training-not going to get into that right now, it will come later. i went out to wait for the rides to pull around and the girls were out talking, which was when i heard the story. brian had heard noises all night long, and had difficulty sleeping because it sounded like someone was in his suite (they are two bedroom suites-one up, one down), so he went down in the morning to shower in the good bathroom, and when he came out, the mirror had fogged up, as mirrors do when one takes a hot shower. then he saw the word HELP! on the mirror...cue twilight zone music and psycho scene... of course, i'm of the nancy drew persuasion, and i explain stuff away. in my mind it was previous tenants, college students our silly teens pranking and writing it on the mirror in soap or something..ala invisible ink-type thing. but i digress, if i were brian, i would probably still be a little weirded out.

so there you have it, round 1, just the beginning-tomorrow will be promising! we've only begun! more to come-

travel and world views

time at my parents was relaxing, as usual. we had a good time just being together-we always do. puzzles, t.v. and projects. while i was home, mom asked if i would eat the cranberries...i suggested making a cranberry salad and what i would add to it. she looked at me and said, "who did you come from?" my parents aren't super adventurous when it comes to food...you may or may not recall the time i got them to go to get sushi with me...that won't ever happen again. but back to the point, it was good to be with them.
favorite parents ever!
the day before i left, i was able to make it into nixa to get my chacos (the actual flip flops, not my dog, thank you kristi!) and visit with robin, chris's wife, their daughters, and martha, the rees matriarch (smile). it was good to catch up, as i feel like every time i'm in town, time just flies by and we never get to touch base. the weather was a bit treacherous that evening, and there were all sorts of warnings, as the rain was ridiculous. in case you need background, we were on the mission field together with the rees family, and carmen was probably one of my first and dearest friends when we arrived to tegucigalpa. and chris and david, my brother were besties too. can you say that about guys? too late...i guess i can.

the next morning, i made my way home in a full 8 hours of rain. yea. the dogs were troopers, because we couldn't get out to walk at any point-the rain was stupid. i had to get home for a dental appt. that was scheduled for today, and it's good to be home.

travel. it is the best time to think (at least when i'm not mentally-or verbally making harsh comments about rude drivers around me...hopefully the boys don't pick up on my bad habits). anyhoo...i've been reading a book: generation me, which mentions bobos in paradise, which i own and have been meaning to read-now i am even more inclined to read it...but it really is interesting, in that it explains a lot about behavior that i notice, but had never really thought too deeply about.

one of the things mentioned is that the culture has changed to being a very self-centered culture, deciding what's good for 'me,' and the basis of decisions comes from a self-determined set of principles. while this is evident everywhere i look, it seems like such an ill-founded concept.

it made me think about my world views, and i have come to the conclusion that pretty much all of my world views are founded within scripture.

wisdom: from the time i read/heard the story of king solomon being asked what one thing he wanted and it would be granted to him, he chose WISDOM...i knew that was important. also james 3:13-18
keeping promises: let your yes be yes, and your no be no- james 5:12
work ethic: whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men...col.3:23
service: though i am free and belong to no man, i make myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible I cor. 9:19
humility: do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. phil. 2:3-4
peace (personal): through following God's laws- great peace have they who love your law and NOTHING can make them stumble psalm 119:165
peace-making: let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification. rom. 14:19
friendship: actually, all of these things fall into the idea of friendships and relationships, but the stories that stuck in my mind from sunday school were the friendships of david and jonathan, ruth and naomi, Jesus, john, peter...
edification: therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. I thes. 5:11
generosity: the macedonian churches who gave generously even in their difficulties II cor. 8, the widow who gave what she had
sexual immorality: I cor. 6:12-20

i could go on and on, but the point is, my world views come from a higher standard. not having a higher authority on your basic principles seems problematic. am i where i need to be by these standards? by no means!  i have work to do in every area, and i'm okay with that...the bigger point is that i have these principles embedded in my heart, and i know that it is by the grace of God and nothing that i can do to reach further and continue to grow!

ok, so i need to finish this book so that i can move on to bobos, recommended by my dear friend nika, years ago!
